Obituary of Marguerite Burr

After a life well lived, Marguerite Burr of Irma passed away peacefully on December 17, 2015 in Viking Extendicare at the age of 94 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters Beverly (Bruce) Munro, Patricia Burr, Wendy(Bill) Holt, and Brian Burr. Her grandchildren are : Carrie (Bernie) Friesen and children Chandler, Jillian, and Garret; Shelly Holt (Ian Hyrhirchuk); Darin (Erin) Holt and daughter Jamie; Kyla (Joel) Christensen and sons Jace and Miller; Cara Holt; Marcee Burr (Tom Thompson); and Braden Burr. She is also survived by her sister Leone Harwood and sister-in-law Lois Olsen, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends and neighbours. Marguerite was predeceased by her husband, Earl Burr (1977), grandson Andrew Burr (1987), daughter-in-law, Debbie Burr (1997), and her parents Charlie and Edith Miller (1952). She was also predeceased by her siblings Art, Ada, Bill, and Maureen. Leta Marguerite (Miller) was born on October 6, 1921 on the family farm north of Hardisty, Alberta. She attended Melbrae country school and took all her high school classes in Hardisty. She attended Normal School in Edmonton to obtain her teaching certificate. She began teaching at Silver Lane south of Irma in 1942-44. She then taught at Ross School north of Irma for two years. During this time she met Earl Burr, a shy, young farmer. They married in July, 1946 and began farming in the Batt district. Marguerite taught at Batt School northwest of Irma from 1946-1950, and retired that year to raise her four children. Marguerite truly was Earl's partner on their mixed farm, She was also a substitute teacher at the Holt Colony School and Irma School for many years. She was very involved in community organizations including Irma Minor Hockey, Irma Ag. Society, the Irma History Book, and the United Church. A celebration honouring Marguerite Burr's life will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016 in the Irma School gymnasium at 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place in the Irma Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Irma Historical Society, Irma Cemetery, or Irma United Church.
